UIA CD-ROM publications
The UIA produced the following CD-ROMs:
- Yearbook Plus: International Organizations, Biographies, Bibliographies (annually) [explication en français]
- Encyclopedia Plus: World Problems and Human Potential (for institutional users) [explication en français]
- UIA Encyclopedia of World Problems and Human Potential (for individual users)
Special features: CD-Rom technology greatly enhances search and cross-reference capabilities. Searches are very fast. They can scan selected fields or the entire text, using keywords or subject categories. There is even a multilingual thesaurus which allows searches in a variety of languages, enabling interaction with the English-language text according to language preference. For example, German users can initiate a search with the word "hund" to access entries on the subject area "dogs".
The renowned C-Content software provides an ideal, user-friendly interface and many additional features, including printing and export. In addition to standard bookmark facilities, users can place their own notes in the text. You can even change the data according to your own information (editing, highlighting and reformating) -- and have the opportunity to feedback suggestions to the editors for use in later updates. In this way you can become aparticipant in the continuing editorial process contributing to future editions and receiving updates of the Encyclopedia through an Internet facility to be activated in the coming months. This provides users with a unique "do-it-yourself" facility in building up a personal Encyclopedia or Yearbook.
Technical data: The three CD-Roms listed below all permit operation on DOS, Windows and Macintosh (Encyclopedia only) platforms. Printing and export facilities are restricted for Yearbook Plus and are limited in DOS.
Special features
- Fast and accurate searching: A major advantage in the C-Content environment is that every word is indexed. Searches are very fast. They can be made by field combinations of fields or for the text as a whole. Standard bookmark facilities allow the user to return to an earlier entry. Notes and highlighters can be used.
- Changes to information content by users: The software allows users to make their own additions and changes to the data. These are saved as special overlay files "through" which users subsequently view the data on the CD-ROM. Different users may have their own overlay files making the tool very interesting for institutional users and student projects.
- Multi-lingual access: Language barriers are a major issue in international organization information. A very rich multilingual thesaurus has been developed to enable users to interact with the data according to their language preference. For example, German users can use German words to access information only available in English.
